Photo Essay

Have you ever heard about the 'one second a day' project? It's about a project in which a person records one second of his life everyday. However, I am going to change change this project into a 'one picture a day' project. I will show you what pictures I took.

I took pictures of the camp I am in right now. The camp name is GLPS (Global Leadership Positioning for Students). It is in KMLA (Korean Minjok Leadership Academy) which is a high school in Korea. I specifically took pictures of the buildings in KMLA. The buildings are Dasan, Chungmu, Minjok, gym, futsal field, football field, basketball court, the golf range, and the dormitory.

 The Dasan building
The Dasan building
The Dasan building
This picture is about the Dasdan building in KMLA. The Dasan building is a three story building (including the attic) and the walls are whitewashed. The Dasan building looks like  an upside down 'L' from the sky.It also has a Korean Traditional roof, a pointed roof covered with ceramic tiles.
In this building our class (18) learn Math and sometimes go to the computer lab to post blogs during Writing. The Dasan building has almost the exact  same in appearance as the Chungmu building instead of the Dasan building.
Fun fact: The Dasan building is named after Jung Yak Yong, the Korean scientist.

 The Chungmu building
The Chungmu building
The Chungmu building

The Chungmu building looks almost exactly the same as the Dasan building. The Chungmu building is located right next to the Dasan building. Which makes it even harder to differentiate between them.
Our class learn History at the second floor of the Chungmu building. The library is located in there too so it is easy to research historical facts. The library is a counter, four computers, and four printers next to the entrance. If you go farther in the library there  are rows and rows of bookshelves.
Fun fact: The Chungmu building is named after Lee Sun Shin , the Korean general during the war with the Japanese.

 The English building
The English building
The English building is a square building with whitewashed walls and a Korean traditional roof that I had explained to you earlier.
The English building is located next to the Minjok building. Our class go there to learn debate, or mock trial there. There is a computer room at the end where we sometimes go to research or post blogs. Our adviser teacher also teaches there.

 The Minjok building
The Minjok building

The Minjok building is just like a Korean traditional house. It is located next to the English building. We learn writing with Miss Angela there.

The Gym/ Futsal field/ Football field/ Basketball court
The football field
The gym

During dinnertime, we have about two hours of free time. What do we do in that time? We exercise. We go to the gym to play basketball and/or badminton, the futsal and football field to play soccer, and the basketball court to play basketball.
The gym is a huge building with basketball hoops inside and there is also some lines o the ground. We use the basketball hoops to play basketball and we use the lines on the ground to play badminton.
The futsal field is small and is made out of fake grass. The football field is approximately the same size as a real football field and is made out of fake grass.
The basketball court is just two hoops standing side by side.

 The golf range

The golf building
The golf range
The golf range

The golf building
The golf range has a six story building to hit the balls, and a huge netted area in front of it in order to not let the balls out. The golf building is simply just too far away. It takes 15 minutes just to get there.

 The dormitory

The dormitory I am living in
The dormitory is a 12 story building with whitewashed walls and a Korean traditional roof. It also has the school name on the side. The basement is used for the boy's laundry. The first floor is used as the lobby, with the principal's office. The 9th floor is used for the girl's laundry. The 11th floor is the study room, and the 12th floor is the cafeteria. The 2-9th floors are all dormitories.

So that were my pictures that I took every day for a week. The project was fun and I strongly recommend it to you.

Persuasive Writing

Jung Woo Seok
Seoul, Korea
2013/8/5

Dear Governor,

I am writing this letter because I believe that factory farming should be banned for the good of society. I will give three reasons for this and give statistics to support my opinion.

The first reason is pollution. Statistics show that livestock cause health problems. Nitrates created by livestock create methemoglobinemia, which can kill infants. The huge amounts of antibiotics (29 million pounds yearly)used in animal feed creates resistant bacteria. Hog farms emit hydrogen sulfide, which can cause brain damage when highly concentrated. It also causes water pollution, In 2011, an Illinois hog farm spilled 200,000 gallon of manure into a creek, killing 110,000 fish. Ammonia, a toxic form of nitrogen, is released as gas during waste disposal. It can cause algal blooms and kills fish.

The second reason is because meat produced from factory farms is of lower quality than ordinary meat. When the cows get slaughtered they are covered in manure, and the farms and slaughterhouses doesn't clean the manure very well. Eventually causing some of the manure to go into our meat which we eat. Also, meats from grass fed cows and free range animals are much more leaner and significantly higher in omega 3 than their factory farmed counterparts.

The third reason is because of cruelty to animals. Animals are fed and sprayed huge amounts of antibiotics, and caged and cramped in tiny places. Chickens, turkeys, and ducks' beaks are removed to reduce cannibalism in factory farms caused by stress.

As you can see, factory farming should be banned for the good of society. Based on my arguments, I hope you will consider my point of view. Factory farming should be banned.

 Sincerely,
 Jung Woo Seok

Barbarians at the Gate

On a stormy night, a man named Robert Jordan is staring across the ocean looking at a country named Albion. Chuckling at what this country will soon become.

A few years ago, Robert Jordan called Cod Slyfox, the leader of the Thieves, Hiccup Horrendous Haddok the Third, ruled of the Vikings, Jack Sparrow, the leader of the Pirates, and Esio, the leader of the Assassins.

Robert Jordan suggested that they should make an alliance and attack Albion. They were eager to make an alliance because it will make them virtually invincible, but they argued about the terms and conditions of the alliance. For example, Hiccup's suggestion to use dragons in the war was rejected because it gave too much power to Hiccup and the Vikings.

Finally, an agreement was reached, the tactics were discussed before every battle and would be judged by Robert Jordan, and the spoils of war divided by how many people died during combat in that group. For example, if 40 Vikings, 30 thieves, 10 pirates, and 20 assassins were killed during combat, 40% of the spoils to the Vikings, 30% of the spoils to the thieves and so on and so forth. The official name for the alliance became the Barbarian Alliance.

With the alliance made, Robert Jordan suggested that they should prepare for three years and then sail for Albion, so they prepared.

                                                                <Three years later>

Now as they sailed for Albion, Robert Jordan started to think about what the Barbarian Alliance is up against.

The Albion Army is composed of ordinary Soldiers that are known for their discipline, which probably comes from the  influence of Captain Scott, Elite Soldiers trained by Commander Cody, archers trained and led by the infamous Robin Hood, spear-men led by Captain Rex, and sailors commanded by Admiral Albert.

The cities of Albion were easy to conquer. All except one, London. The capital of Albion, with towering walls and powerful defenses, it gave a huge advantage to the defenders. Robert Jordan guessed that the fight will go down to London.

Robert was right. The Barbarian Alliance easily conquered the other cities of Albion. As both sides gathered up their forces and prepared for in London, the leaders gathered around to discuss a battle strategy. Hiccup suggested that they should use dragons to fly over the walls. Esio suggested that they should assassinate the leaders of Albion. On the conditions of giving the assassins 80% of the spoils of war. The Vikings suggested that they should surround London and lay siege to the castle. It was Robert Jordan who had to make the decision. You will have to make the decision. What will you do?
